Ring the changes with a rug
There’s still time – just – for a new rug for Christmas
It’s a fact that home owners are increasingly choosing hard surface floors for most if not all of the ground floor. (We still think a carpet for the living room is the all round better solution but there are lots of reasons why people will opt for a hard floor for the whole of their downstairs area.)
But then, for reasons of practicality as well as aesthetics many people will then wish to cover part of these areas. Do check out our previous article about rugs and how they complement hard surface floors: how fabulous they can look, how they absorb noise, add comfort, provide warmth and create areas which “ground” the furniture.
A new rug for a new look
Of course you can also swap one rug for another according to the season, and from room to room as well to ring the changes. A new rug can create a completely new look for your room reflecting your mood or a fashion trend. And deciding to buy a fun new rug doesn’t have the serious long term connotations as when you’re considering investing in a whole new carpet.
Alternative Flooring: quality, colourful, quirky and British!
What’s more thanks to suppliers like Alternative Flooring, design led British company whose fabulous characterful and quirky carpets and rugs are made from top quality natural fabrics, you can have a totally unique rug made precisely to your specification.
And the best news is that if you get your skates on you may still be able to get a rug made in time for Christmas. Give us a ring or better still come and have a chat!
Meanwhile feel free to borrow some inspiration from Alternative Flooring’s “Rug Stars”!
Colourful and a little crazy
Award-winning woven textile designer Margo Selby has chosen one of her own designs: Stripe Frolic Westbrook, with inner Double Piping Cotton Border in Pink and an outer Stripes Thick Black border.
“I also have the Frolic Westbrook design on a staircase and it always gets comments from visitors on how vibrant it is. I feel it brings an injection of joy to an area of the house that can often get neglected.”
“I’ve been trying my rug in both my home studio and living room. The great thing about a rug is that it’s transferable, from room to room and house to house. I love change and recently moved house, it’s refreshing to bring familiar items into a new space and play with them to find them a new home.”
“The simple stripe design of Frolic Westbrook features colours that come from my colour palette theory of pairing dark and light, highlight and bright colours. The outcome is balanced but also interesting and playful.”
Monochrome and stylish
Meanwhile Kate Watson-Smyth is a Journalist and the Interiors Blogger of “Mad About The House” – a fantastic reference book for modern living.
In this instance she needed a rug for her 17 year old son’s bedroom, which was a fairly tight brief given that he only likes black and grey. But the result – Wool Pebble Stade with a thick stripe grey border – is both smart and stunning!
Kate explains that her design inspirations come from anywhere and everywhere including “restaurant loos as they quite often use amazing tiles and decor effects to make the most of a small space” and hotel rooms which also often have to fit a lot into a small space.

The Telltale Signs You Need A New Carpet
Whether or not for Christmas it’s a win win with John Cooper Carpets…
There are merits to having a new carpet or even a new mat to welcome your guests for Christmas, but the Festive Season is also prime time for spills so maybe best to postpone fitting until the New Year.
Meanwhile if some of these signs are familiar it’s probably time for a new carpet for your own delight – whether before or after Christmas.
Your lovely new carpet was pristine and pleasing to the eye, soft and bouncy to the foot, made you feel proud. Then came parties, children, pets, and those inevitable clumsy moments.
If you’re hiding an increasing number of stubborn stains with strategically placed furniture, it’s time for a new carpet!
Here at John Cooper Carpets Lymington we offer a wide choice of excellent quality stain resistant carpets from our brilliant value Greendale range, as well as alternative types of flooring and fabulous rugs (matching socks not included).
Are you spraying freshener on carpets to camouflage smells? No matter how careful you are, the fibres in carpets attract and hold dust and moisture which eventually turns to musty smelling mildew especially when pets lie on them too. At John Cooper Carpets we can advise on odour-resistant carpets too.
Threadbare areas and frayed edges, scratched by the dog or cat for good measure? Replacing with John Cooper Carpets is so easy – either come to the showroom or we’ll be happy to visit with samples. The newest ranges include some exceptionally tough carpet options too for well used areas too – let us show you!
Limp & lifeless underlay
Less than a spring in your step? Underlay makes a huge difference! Spills are also over time absorbed by the underlay. If you want to enjoy the sensation of thick, comfy carpet underfoot again, talk to us at John Cooper Carpets. A good quality underlay is a sensible investment which we’ll explain.
Sneezes and wheezes
It may not be a seasonal sniffle! Allergens live in the crevices and fibres of older carpets, which can increase allergy symptoms and is another good reason to refresh flooring. If allergies are a serious issue we’ll show you some alternative flooring solutions to carpet as well.
“That’s the carpet my granny had in her house”
You know a style overhaul is due! Whatever your budget and whether you prefer contemporary or traditional, we have options for all tastes from our fantastic range of Greendale carpets to rugs and runners like this from Alternative Floorings.

Enhance your room with a bespoke rug
Hard floors and fitted carpet can benefit from a rug
Increasingly hard floors are a popular choice downstairs, whether hardwood, laminate, vinyl or tile. Incredibly practical, they can lack a certain snugness which can be easily remedied with a rug. A rug has a unique way of bringing together all the elements of a room, such as the style and colour scheme. A rug can also be laid over wall-to-wall carpet to enhance a room.
There are many other benefits of having a rug:
A rug will significantly decrease the noise in your space. Carpet quieter to walk on than a hard floor and also absorbs sound from the air. Lay down an area rug and listen to the difference.
Comfort and warmth
Carpet is, of course, a lot softer than a hard floor and far more comfortable to stand on. A rug is also warmer than a hard floor, providing greater insulation, especially if it has a pad under the rug.
A rug helps space feel grounded. When properly placed, a rug can help anchor the furniture in a room, which helps to create a cozy, intimate space. For example a living room rug should be large enough that all the main pieces of furniture are all sitting on or touching the rug. Without the rug, it can feel as though the furniture is lost or floating in the room.
JCC Top Tip: Choose the biggest rug you can afford for the space to pull the room together.
A rug can also help the space the feel calmer. Energy travels quickly over hard surfaces, and more slowly over soft surfaces. Fast-flowing energy can create feelings of excitability or anxiety, so with nothing to slow down the energy flow, space can feel somewhat chaotic. A rug slows the energy and introduces a sense of calm.
A rug can actually have a positive effect on allergens in the home. For years, people with allergies have been advised to remove all carpeting from the home, as carpets trap allergens. Recent studies have shown that carpet is actually beneficial to allergy sufferers because it traps allergens, keeping them out of the air, where they will be breathed in. If you have no carpet in your home and suffer from allergies or other breathing conditions, you may find that a rug will help alleviate some of those problems.
